Martin Luther - a life for Wittenberg

Martin Luther and the Reformation – hardly any other place is as connected to these terms as Lutherstadt Wittenberg. The greatest reformer in church history fundamentally changed the world order in the Middle Ages. And all this in the city of Wittenberg, which has been popular with tourists for years. Because hardly any city can call itself a “unique open-air museum”.

According to tradition, on October 31, 1517, Martin Luther slammed the 95 theses against the indulgence practice of the church at the door of the castle church. In 1760, during the Seven Years’ War, the castle church was badly damaged and burned out.

From 1885 to 1992, the palace church was rebuilt on a large scale under the supervision of the Prussian architect Friedrich Adler to become a memorial to the Reformation.

The graves of Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon can still be found inside the church. Also worth seeing are the bronze epitaphs of Frederick the Wise and his brother Johann the Persistent from the Vischer workshop in Nuremberg. The castle church has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996. With the new building of the residential palace for Elector Friedrich III. built by Saxony from 1489 and inaugurated in 1503.

The Melanchtonhaus in Wittenberg is also particularly popular. Built in 1536 in the Renaissance style for the important German humanist and reformer Philipp Melanchthon, it is still one of the most beautiful town houses in the city. The permanent exhibition inside “Philipp Melanchthon – Life – Work – Effect” is a very special visitor magnet.
